Before Jesus’ ascension, He commissioned the disciples saying, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8) The arrival of the Holy Spirit gave New Testament believers the opportunity to experience the power of the Holy Spirit and to share the “light” or message of the gospel with others. The Holy Spirit is God just like Jesus is God. That same Holy Spirit lives in us as modern-day believers, giving us the power we need to be a light in this dark world.
Family Activity:
Teaching Time: 10 minutes
Materials: flashlight, batteries, dark room
Give your child a flashlight with no batteries. Have him try to turn it on. How useful would this be in a dark room? Put batteries in the flashlight and hand it back to your child. Ask him to turn on the flashlight now. Talk about what gave the flashlight power.
Discuss:
- What gave the flashlight power? Was it useful without this power source?
- Read Acts 1:8, 2:1-13. God gives us a power source as well. Who is it? What does the Holy Spirit help us do?
Pray:
Pray and thank God for sending the power of the Holy Spirit.
