Family worship is one way of passing down our faith to the next generation. Singing, praying, reading God’s word, and serving are elements of worship we can teach our children, but true worship goes beyond actions. Worship is a heart response of love towards God and a deep desire to honor Him in all areas of our lives. As parents, we want to cultivate a habit of worship that engages children’s hearts.
Family Activity:
Teaching Time: 12 minutes
Materials: favorite possession (or photo of it), sticky note for each person, pencils/pens
Invite each family member to show their favorite possession and discuss the following ideas:
- Why is this possession important to you?
- How do you protect or keep it safe?
- How would you feel if it were ruined or lost?
- Have you ever shared this possession?
Our favorite things have worth, not because of how much they cost, but because we value and treasure them in our hearts. How much do we value and treasure God? The word “worship” means God’s worth. Have each person write “God” on a sticky note. Then add words that tell what you love about God’s character. Parents and older siblings can help young children. Share your ideas and then attach the sticky notes to your favorite possessions.
Discuss:
- If God were worth as much to us as our favorite possessions, what might we do differently?
- How can our family share God’s worth with other people?
Pray:
Ask God to give your family soft hearts that are continually filled with the wonder of who God is.
