After Solomon became king, the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.” Solomon’s request for wisdom pleased God. He not only gave Solomon a wise and discerning heart, but riches and honor as well (1 Kings 3:12-13). Solomon became great and leaders from all nations came to listen to his wisdom. The Queen of Sheba heard about Solomon’s fame and his relationship to the Lord. She came to test Solomon with tough questions. After meeting Solomon and seeing his kingdom, the Queen praised God for what He had given Solomon and for His eternal love for Israel.
Bible: Read 1 Kings 10:1-13, 23-24 with your family.
Family Activity:
Teaching Time: over several days
Materials: small pieces of paper/index cards, binder ring (optional)
A few days prior to this activity, seek out 2-4 people of influence in your child’s life that they see on a regular basis. This could be a grandparent, a teacher, pastor, a neighbor, etc. Have them write down a piece of godly wisdom on a small sheet of paper or index card.
The Queen of Sheba heard about Solomon’s wisdom, fame, and riches. She traveled great lengths to see Solomon and ask him difficult questions. She was seeking wisdom. She found that Solomon’s wisdom did not come from himself, but from God!
Explain that we can seek godly wisdom, too. Tell your children about the people you chose and that they each have a piece of wisdom to give them. Throughout the week as they see these people, have your child ask them for godly wisdom. The influential people you have chosen should then share the godly wisdom they wrote down and hand your child the paper. At the end of the week, gather all of the pieces of wisdom. Punch a hole in each and put them on a binder ring so you can save them.
Option: For younger children, write your own words of wisdom on 2-4 cards and hide them throughout the house. Send your children on a hunt to seek wisdom.
Discuss:
- Read James 1:5. Where do we get wisdom? What type of people should we seek for wisdom?
- What things happen in the world that cause people to seek godly wisdom?
Pray:
Pray that people around the world seeking answers would turn to godly people for wisdom.
