Involve Your Children in the Mission of Prayer

Prayer is a powerful gift given to us so we can hear from and talk with God directly. It’s powerful for so many reasons. Praying with our children consistently is forming in that it shapes our minds and hearts. Prayer with our children affords us the opportunity to pray our heart for our children aloud to God and it allows us to pray the heart of God for people and the nations with our children.

There are blessings and prayers all throughout the Scriptures that my family loves to pray for one another. One of my favorites is Ephesians 3:14-21. If you have time now, read it. This passage is a profound blessing to pray over your children or your spouse. It is glorious to pray with your spouse and children for families all around the world to receive the blessing of knowing the steadfast, transformational love of Christ.

One night as I was praying this scriptural blessing over our daughter, I became fixated on verses 14-15.

“For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named.” (Ephesians 3:14-15, ESV)

In a moment of clarity, I realized God in His sovereignty knows every family in heaven and on earth because He named them. That thought resonated with me and changed the way my family prays this blessing. The prayer became “missional” as we prayed for families that we are connected with all over the world. Some of these families are Muslim. Some of them are Jewish. Still others are Christian. And by the way, they all know we pray for them.

The Sayin family in Turkiye.

The Abboud family in Lebanon.

The Sawan family in Lebanon.

The Ben Moshe family in Israel.

The Kravchenko family in Ukraine.

Our Great God loves each and every family in the world and desires each one to experience the richness of verse 19 of this blessing.

“…and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3:19, ESV)

Involve your children in the mission of God by praying for the families of the world together. Maybe, like us, you are connected with families around the world in relationship. Share those relationships with your children and pray. Use social media to help your children see and know who they are praying over. Then, really and regularly, pray for the families of the world.
