As Christian parents, we rightly spend lots of time teaching\nand encouraging our children to love others. Our desire is that the Holy Spirit\nwould move so powerfully in their hearts that they would overflow with Christ’s\nlove and compassion for people near and far. However, did you know that God\nalso calls us to stand against evil? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Romans 12:9: \u201cLet love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to\nwhat is good.\u201d <\/em>(ESV)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Obviously, this is not a command from God to abhor people,\nbut rather to abhor evil<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hatred is a powerful, driving force behind many horrible\nsins, abuse, and injustice. However, a godly, Christ-like standing against and abhorrence of evil<\/em> has rightly compelled\nbelievers down through the centuries to lay down their time, money, reputations,\nand even their lives to oppose it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we abhor evil, and love people, we are propelled into\naction for the kingdom of God. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have you ever talked with your teenage children about human\ntrafficking? What was their response? I hope that two emotions welled up within\nthem – first, compassion for those who are suffering and trapped in bondage –\nand second, revulsion toward this evil. It is this godly combination of\nstanding against evil and love for people that compels us to engage and do\nsomething to help. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s help our children abhor false religions and be filled\nwith love for the people who are deceived by them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s help our children abhor abortion, and love women who\nare experiencing crisis pregnancies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s help our children abhor communism and other oppressive\ngovernmental structures, and seek to love those who are being crushed by them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s help our children abhor racism in all its forms, and\noverflow with God’s love for all people so that we never judge another person\nbecause of the color of his skin or where he was born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Read and discuss Romans 12:9 with your children. Also,\nconsider together Psalm 97:10, \u201cLet those who love the Lord hate evil.\u201d (NIV) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What might this principle look like as a part of your\nregular family life?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, this can help guide you in talking with your children\nabout suffering in the world. If your child is exposed to a situation involving\nracism, either in the news or in their own life, it can be helpful to ask,\n“How does this situation make you feel?” The child will likely\nrespond with something like, \u201cI don’t like it. It makes me sad. It makes me\nmad.\u201d This is your opportunity to affirm those negative <\/em>emotions. Your child is expressing an abhorrence for evil.\nYou could reply, \u201cI feel the same way. In fact, I hate seeing people being\ntreated differently because of the color of their skin or where they were born.\nGod hates it too.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then you can move to the second part of the principle, \u201cHow\ndo you think we could show God’s love to people who may be hurting and\nsuffering from the effects of racism? How can we make sure that we never treat\npeople any better or any worse because of the color of their skin?\u201d With this\nquestion you can explore ideas such as inviting a family from another culture\nover to your home, intentionally befriending someone at school, or sticking up\nfor someone who is being mistreated.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
